Etsy: one the one hand empowering female designers to run their own business with flexibility and autonomy, but on the other it reproduces the limiting image of women in arts and crafts, or characterising ‚design‘ as domestic work rather than a critical and holistic reflection of the confrontation with social conditions and relations. Wall Street Journal reports that 86% of the 1.4 million active sellers are female but only 30% of its sellers use their creative business as their sole source of earnings. So, selling handmade goods and their online marketplaces might contribute to keep women in (multiple) low income positions and drive a „transition away from the security, reliable incomes and protections“. What do you think?
This sign is a total failure not only in the aspects of gender and design, have a look!
Last Friday, our Rethink!-Exhibition opened in Berlin at designtransfer at the UDK. To begin with the ‚Gender-Talk‘, PHD candidates Fred Meyer-Menzel and Michelle Christensen discussed gender issues and perspectives in design with Dr. Barbara Sandow and Prof. Dr. Uta Brandes. The exhibition grew with four exhibits by UDK students, and was opened with a short introduction by Prof. Dr. Uta Brandes and the performance of ‚amorphé‘. The exhibition will be open 28. April – 15. May, Di – Fr, 10 – 18o’clock. Ilka Schauberg, head of designtransfer, and her team were so fun and easy to work with, thank you very much for the wonderful time in Berlin!

Last Friday (March 27), we proudly opened the Blue + Pink >>> Rethink! Exhibition @designxport in Hamburg’s Harbour City. The event started wit the panel discussion „Gender Talk“ featuring Prof. Dr. Gesa Ziemer (Professor for Cultural Theory and Cultural Practice and vice president of research at HafenCity University, Hamburg) our very own founding member Tanja Godlewsky, Designer, executive associate FRAM Büro für Konzept und Design, Köln), Björn Welzel (executive associate Fritz Classen, Hamburg) Christian Schüten (Designer, associate BFGF Design Studios, Hamburg), moderated by Prof. Dr. Uta Brandes and Dr. Babette Peters. Soon, the audience contributed to a discussion full of intelligent comments, critical perspectives and controversial statements. So, the intention of the exhibition and the talk came off completely. Prior to the opening of the exhibition, curator Uta Brandes gave a short, enjoyable introduction to general questions of gender and design, followed by a breathtaking performance of Katja Trinkwalder’s and Paul Claussen’s concept fashion „amorphé“. Last but not least, we want to thank the wonderful team at designxport, Anja Heinemann and of course, Dr. Babette Peters. The exhibition will …

The interweaving of language and gender clearly can contribute to a differentiated approach towards design, therefore this study on gendered language in teacher reviews worth reading: „Men are sexualized when they teach in fields culturally associated with “femininity” and women are sexualized when they teach in fields culturally associated with “masculinity.” https://gendersociety.wordpress.com/2015/03/14/beyond-bossy-or-brilliant/
