Gender and Design – a Gendered Approach to Everyday Design At first glance, it may seem surprising for GENDER to dedicate a special issue to the subject of design. Yet, a closer look reveals that design determines everyday life anywhere and anytime – and thus also influences the everyday actions of subjects. There is no moment in which we are not faced or act with designed things, symbols, communication and services. Regardless of whether the designed artifacts and processes appear as successful or unsuccessful, smart or stupid, meaningful or meaningless, they are an integral part of the working and living conditions of people, because everything is designed: chairs, kitchen aids, pencils, laptops, clothing, ATMs, traffic signs, logos, services, etc. This form of communication is inevitably gendered, at least under three aspects: with regard to the gendered subject, the gendered object and the gendered interface, i.e. the relationship between subject and object.
